A good friend who’s known me since our early days at the clubs — and by clubs, I mean dashing across a parking lot underneath the train tracks in a not-so-desirable part of Cincinnati, Ohio, with a six-pack of Keystone Light in the back seat — suggested I create a “viral dance” to attract new subscribers.

So, as my first order of business, I will dismantle the viral dance. I don’t have the time or interest to unearth the “first,” but let’s say it goes back as long as the internet, including flash-in-the-pants moments like “The Harlem Shake” (2013) and the more recent Raygun, who mystified audiences at the 2024 Paris Olympics.

My social media algorithm drives me toward musical theater iterations, which took off last summer with rehearsal footage from Cats: “The Jellicle Ball’ and then quickly caught on when The Great Gatsby released a portion of choreographer Dominique Kelly’s “New Money.”

Wicked couldn’t be left far behind since it’s monopolized nearly every ounce of entertainment real estate long before the movie was released on November 22. The film’s creators broke down “Dancing Through Life” (which is one of the stage musical’s most snoozy sequences), and now everybody and their mother is living their Jonathan Bailey fantasy.

1MC takeaway: Dance ‘til your heart’s content. Like most social media, my reaction depends on my mood. One day, I might get up and pirouette my way across my fake parquet floors. Another might take me down a rabbit hole of onstage fumbles, which I’m embarrassed to say make me chuckle as long as nobody is hurt.
