What Adrien Brody, Keanu Reeves & Ayo Edebiri don't want in common
Three A-listers, one tough season, and a lot of empty envelopes.
The Tony Awards—Broadway’s biggest honor—announced nominations earlier this week, and a handful of glaring omissions may indicate a shifting of the tide when it comes to TV and film stars clamoring to the stage.
It was a wonky season, regardless, with only six new musicals opening, including the short-lived The Queen of Versailles, starring Kristin Chenoweth, which ran for only 49 performances. The great Hollywood-to-Broadway migration continued, with A-list star power attached to projects that producers hoped would lure starstruck theatergoers into seats. That may have worked to some degree, and Tonys don’t necessarily equate financial success. (Look at Wicked, which lost Best Musical to Avenue Q in 2004 and is still running strong.) But above-the-title billing is an artistic gamble. Here’s a look at three performances shut out of Tony nominations and what might have gone wrong.
